Recently, on the occasion of the festival « Les Dunes Électroniques » (The Electronic Dunes), many of you discovered or rediscovered the magnificent site of Ong Jmel near Nefta - home to the decor village Mos Espa, where several episodes of the Star Wars saga were filmed - and were made aware of its fragile beauty. But this mythical place is in danger and the authorities in charge of the site have sent many warnings. If nothing is done in the coming months, the desert will bury forever a part of the set and damage the remaining structures. When this cultural heritage is of high importance to the local economy and global culture.
Récemment, à l’occasion du festival Les Dunes Électroniques, vous avez été nombreux à découvrir ou à redécouvrir le site magnifique de Ong Jmel près de Nefta - qui abrite les décors du village Mos Espa où ont été tournés des épisodes de la saga Stars Wars - et à être sensibilisés à sa beauté fragile. Or ce lieu mythique est en danger et les autorités en charge tirent désormais la sonnette d’alarme. Si rien n’est fait dans les trois prochains mois, le désert va ensevelir à jamais une partie des décors et endommager les structures restantes. Or ce patrimoine culturel est d’une très haute importance pour l’économie touristique locale.

Today, the Tunisian association CDTOS (Tourism Chamber for the Oasis and Sahara regions) is taking action and launching the operation « Save Mos Espa ». Standing as a new citizens’ association initiative, « Save Mos Espa » is an international campaign aimed at raising the necessary funds for the work required to save the site of Ong Jmel in Nefta.  In the coming weeks and to halt the progression of the desert, urgent work involving the moving of the barkhane body (large mobile dune) will start with the support of specialized scientific institutions, the Regional Commissioner for Tourism, the Ministries of Tourism, Culture and Environment, and the city governorates of Tozeur and Nefta.
À l’initiative de Madame la Ministre du Tourisme, l’association CDTOS (chambre de développement du tourisme oasien et saharien) se mobilise en lançant l’opération « Save Mos Espa ». Initiative associative citoyenne indépendante et totalement nouvelle en Tunisie, « Save Mos Espa » est une campagne internationale qui a pour objectif de lever les fonds nécessaires au sauvetage du site. Dans les prochaines semaines et pour stopper la progression du sable, des travaux urgents de déplacement du corps de la barkhane (grande dune mobile) vont démarrer avec l’appui des institutions scientifiques idoines, du commissariat régional au Tourisme, des ministères du Tourisme, de la Culture et de l’Environnement, de gouvernorat de la ville de Tozeur et de la mairie de Nefta.

The media campaign will unfold in two parts :
- First, a national phase will aim at raising financial support from patrons and Tunisian companies, and will include an auctions evening.
- Then, in the second phase, an international appeal for donations will be undertaken, via a crowdfunding platform (indiegogo.com).
Cette campagne de médiatisation va se déployer sur deux volets. Un premier levier national qui a pour objectif d’obtenir le soutien financier des mécènes et des entreprises tunisiennes, notamment lors de grandes soirées ; Et un appel international aux dons via une plateforme de Crowdfunding (indiegogo.com).

We thus hope to raise the 300 000 dinars (approximately 200 000 dollars) necessary to kick-start the first phases of the rescue operation :
- 150 000 dinars (100 000 dollars) to undertake the work of moving the body of the dune and to ensure the sustainability of the village structures
- then 150 000 dinars (100 000 dollars) to develop the tools and infrastructure for the promotion of the site and include it in a touristic and cultural sustainable development program.
La CDTOS espère ainsi lever les quelques 300 000 dinars nécessaires aux premières phases de l’opération : 150 000 dinars pour entreprendre les travaux de déplacement du corps de la dune et pour assurer la pérennisation des structures du village, puis 150 000 dinars pour développer les outils et les infrastructures de valorisation du site et pour l’inscrire dans un programme touristique et culturel de développement durable.

The economic, social and cultural impact of the « Save Mos Espa » operation will be immediately measurable: the promotion of the Star Wars film sets in Tunisia, the creation of an eco-museum on site, the training of specialized guides, the enhancement of local crafts’ typology, a new momentum to the hotel, events and entertainment industries…
L’impact économique, social et culturel de l’opération « Save Mos Espa » sera immédiatement mesurable : Valorisation des sites de tournage de la Guerre des Étoiles en Tunisie, formation de guides spécialisés, renouvellement de la typologie de l’artisanat in situ, nouvelle dynamique hôtelière et événementielle…
